Candle Etiquette

I love having two or three candles lit around the home. The whiff of a scent as you walk into a room adds that warmth and cosiness that really makes my house a home. Gentle aromas floating about in your space of comfort is the key formula to creating that exceptional olfactory experience that induces a sense of peacefulness.

The first time you light your Ahloki candle, please burn until the wax melts to the edge of the glass container. This will help keep the top of the wax smooth, preventing an uneven burn. The first rule I learnt was always burn your candle no less than 1 hour and no more than 4 hours. This will avoid tunnelling and wax does not stick on the side of the glass jar.

It is important to trim the wick to a quarter of an inch before each burn, as this will help prevent any smoking and will keep any residue from dropping into the wax. Good wax will not smoke and a good wick will not produce harmful soot, but to avoid smoking it is always good to keep the wick trimmed. See out candle accessories for more details on purchasing a wick trimmer, snugger and dipper.

It is important to handle your candles safely and more importantly if there are pets and children in the home. Therefore please ensure you follow all the candle safety guidelines below.

  • To prevent fire or serious injury never leave a lighted candle unattended.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
  • Keep candle away from draught.
  • Keep your candle away from anything that could be a fire hazard.
  • Never touch a burning candle when the wax is liquid.
  • Always trim the wick or clean the wax once the candle has gone cold.
  • Keep lit candles at least 3 inches apart and place them on a stable, heat resistant surface.
  • Do not move a burning candle.
